The Korean set only at The Ridge
The evening of 30th April
2014, my course mate the culinary degree student of HM225 and HM245 went to the
ridge at Jeti Pulau Batu kawan. Situated on the pier like at the edge of
beach, it uses the outdoor dining experience to attract customer who like to be
serenade with the sound of beach and color of the sunset while eating and
enjoying it. In this article I want to share my food review of the ridge. The
restaurant serve a wide variety of food range for lunch and dinner
with a la carte, course set and buffet if requested by the customer. The set cost
RM160 per set for 6-8 people. For us, it’s quite a reasonable for a 7 people to
enjoy. Our group request a vast variety of set dinner such as Thai set, Malay set,
western set, Korean set, Chinese set, seafood set and mix grill set. As for
that, we also get an appetizer buffet at front table. The buffet consists of
white rice, fried rice, potato salad, minced chicken with herbs and seafood
soup. In my view, the most exquisite appetizer is the seafood soup where
it is filled with crab and prawn and simmers to increase the flavor. The soup
is clear and the seafood was tender so it easy for me to eat it.
I and my friend
choose an Korean set where we were given a tray full of seafood consist of
prawn, squid ring and stuff crab, chicken meat, beef slice and many kind of
vegetable to grill such as Enoki mushroom, onion ring, capsicum, carrot and
slices eggplant. Apart from that we receive a big bowl of sticky rice and 4 serving
of kimchi. We grill the prawn first because it looks appetizing with drizzle of
the sesame seed. We grilled it until it looks brown and ate it with the sticky
rice. Then I try the grill vegetable with the sesame soy sauce which
increase the flavor and fragrance of the vegetable. After I have an satisfied
meal, I try the Fruit Cocktail they serve at front table. It is good. The
flavor of thick milk with a mild scent of fruit such as apple, laici and
pineapple where those foods are diced and nata de coco, grass jelly put in the
cocktail. The taste is good considered I just eat in front of the grill, so a
cold and refreshing taste is what I needed.
The Kimchi
Apart from all those food, I want to focus on the kimchi, one of the food
heritages of the Korean. It fermented the cabbage with paste of chili flake,
water, kosher salt, sugar, ginger, garlic, onion and sometimes they add fish
sauce or salted squid. At the ridge, this dish caught my eyes where the
taste is very unique. The ginger strong taste was blended with the chili flakes
spiciness and the garlic provide the fragrance of freshness and the color
was red with help of chili flakes. The first bite was full of flavor and then I
eat it with rice and grill Enoki mushroom. The taste really improved with the
help of kimchi. To me the taste was suitable for my tongue and I recommended
for the Korean fan to try it.
